This Week in Friend Slop: Death Finally Sticks

Somebody just went down at the barricade, and this time nobody's coming back to finish the run with you.

No More Room in Hell 2 shed its Early Access tag on August 11 with a real 1.0 — eight-player zombie survival built on scavenging, boarding up windows, and permadeath that actually means it. Die on a run and you're done for that run, full stop; a new Survival mode stretches lobbies to eight, a no-permadeath Solo mode exists for anyone who wants training wheels, and cross-play means your console friends can finally get dragged into the horde with you. It's the rare sequel that remembers its own mod-scene roots — Half-Life's Source engine grime, upgraded — while making the stakes meaner than the original ever dared.

Set it against Left 4 Dead 2 and the whole zombie-co-op family tree splits in two. L4D2 is the genre's action-movie register: four survivors, an AI Director escalating the horde on cue, a shotgun in every hand and a safe room always somewhere ahead. It's chaos with a pulse — loud, funny, built to be won. No More Room in Hell 2 strips all of that swagger out. There's no Director tuning the pace for drama, no guaranteed safe room, and no coming back once you're bitten. L4D2 dares you to survive stylishly. NMRIH2 just dares you to survive.

Play them back to back this weekend and you'll feel exactly where "friend slop" sits on the horror-co-op spectrum — one end pure adrenaline, the other pure dread, both ending with somebody yelling "why didn't you tell me you were low on ammo."

Grab a full eight-person lobby, agree in advance on who's covering the door, and go find out how long your group lasts once death actually means something.
