This Week in Friend Slop: Nobody Revives You For Free Anymore

Your buddy just went down for the last time — and this time, "for the last time" isn't a euphemism, it's the whole game.

No More Room in Hell 2 shed its Early Access tag on August 11, and the zombie co-op that started life as a scrappy Half-Life mod two decades ago has grown into a full eight-player survival game that means every death. Scavenge for supplies, barricade windows with whatever's lying around, and ration ammo like your life depends on it — because it does. The new Survival mode pushes lobbies to a full eight, permadeath sticks for the entire run, and cross-play finally lets your PS5 and Xbox friends board up the same house as your PC squad. There's a no-permadeath Solo mode for anyone who wants the dread without losing a whole session to one bad door.

Set it against Left 4 Dead 2 and the family tree is obvious, but the temperature couldn't be more different. Valve's classic is generous by design — ammo piles everywhere, teammates who revive you off the ground, a Director AI that's basically rooting for your squad to make the finale. No More Room in Hell 2 keeps the same four-against-a-horde shape and strips out every safety net: no free revives, no checkpoint forgiving your last mistake, just a barricade that's only as sturdy as whoever nailed the boards on. Left 4 Dead 2 asks whether your squad can survive together. NMRIH2 asks whether you can survive at all.

That's the whole zombie-co-op spectrum in one Friday night — heroic chaos on one end, grim math on the other — and somewhere in the middle, someone's still yelling "I'm almost done with the boards!"

Grab three friends, nail the boards on properly this time, and find out which kind of zombie night your group actually wants.

Nobody picked it, so nobody can complain. That's just physics.
