This Week in Friend Slop: Your Mic Is Either the Weapon or the Target
Something with antlers just heard you whisper "I think it's over here," and now it isn't over there anymore.
It Hears You: Together dropped October 8 and it does the cruelest thing a co-op horror game can do: it makes your actual voice chat the detection mechanic. Stag, the towering, nearly-blind mutant stalking the forest, can't see you — it hears footsteps, breathing, clinking gear, and every word your squad says over in-game comms. Fix the car or call in evac and you win, but either path means making noise, so six friends end up splitting jobs, chucking decoy rocks, and reducing an entire rescue mission to a whisper. The genre has been inching toward "your voice is the threat" for a while; this is the sharpest, meanest version of it yet.
Now put it next to Big Walk, this year's highest-reviewed co-op release, where proximity chat is also the whole game — except there it's not a threat, it's the puzzle. Your voice fades with distance, muffles through walls, crackles through a walkie-talkie, and the entire point is figuring out how to be heard, not how to stay silent. Same core system, opposite stakes: one game punishes you for talking, the other can't function without it. Play them back to back and you get the full range of what "proximity chat" has quietly become in this genre — sometimes it's the rope that pulls your group together, sometimes it's the leash something uses to find you.
That's the real throughline of friend slop lately: the mic isn't a feature bolted onto co-op anymore, it's load-bearing. Design around it and you get Big Walk. Weaponize it and you get Stag breathing down someone's neck in a dark Unreal Engine forest.
Grab five friends, agree on a decoy signal before you boot it up, and find out which one of you can't stop narrating.
