This Week in Friend Slop: Nobody's Trying to Kill You, Somehow That's Harder
Somebody just winched their own truck into the lake they were trying to pull you out of, and there is no quota, no monster, no fog to blame for it.
Over the Hill rolled onto Steam October 14 from the Art of Rally team, and it is the calmest thing to enter the catalog in months off the back of a demo that pulled over 500,000 players. One to four friends crew vintage 4x4s across forests, lakes, and mountains with planks, winches, and a grappling hook, and that's the whole toolkit. No lap times, no combat, no timer — just dynamic weather, hidden cabins, and the slow-burn argument over who steered a perfectly good truck into a ditch. It's a hang disguised as a driving game.
Set it against Lethal Company and the contrast is the whole point. Lethal Company built its dread out of pressure — a scrap quota ticking down, fog that eats sound, a proximity mic that turns "wait, where'd you go" into the last thing you hear from someone. Over the Hill strips every one of those stakes out and the chaos doesn't go anywhere. Nobody's dying, nobody's losing progress, and your friend still manages to drag the whole crew's night sideways by winching wrong at the exact worst moment. Lethal Company proves the monster was never really the threat. Over the Hill proves you didn't need one.
That's the real tell: take away every consequence this genre usually leans on and the only thing left standing between your group and a good night is each other, same as always.
Grab three friends, bring a truck you don't mind losing, and go find out who gets stuck first.
