This Week in Friend Slop: Your Body Breaks, You Keep Going

Your wooden body just cracked in half, and you're still in the fight — now as a screaming ball of light hunting for a new one.

GRAIN ROT launched Steam-wide August 7 off a viral pre-launch surge, and it takes extraction horror to a nastier place than the genre usually goes. You and up to three friends pilot fragile wooden vessels down into the Deep Layers, hauling loot back to a scorched Outpost while the Corrupted circle. Die and you don't respawn clean — you become a disembodied Living Spark, still very much playable, still very much a target, scrambling to find a new body before the run ends without you. It's extraction-horror's usual bargain — go deeper, grab more, maybe don't come back — with a death mechanic that refuses to let you sit out the consequences.

Set it next to Lethal Company and the lineage is obvious, but the temperature's different. Lethal Company's dread lives in the space between people — the fog swallowing sound, a "wait, where'd you go" that never gets answered. GRAIN ROT's dread lives inside your own character: your body is a resource on a countdown, and losing it doesn't end your night, it just changes what you're desperately negotiating for next. Lethal Company asks whether you got separated. GRAIN ROT asks what's left of you to call a body at all.

Both games are proof the genre still has new ways to make "just one more run" hurt. Play the classic for the comms-first panic of losing a teammate; play the new one to watch a body count turn personal.

Grab three friends, bring a body you don't mind losing, and go find out what's still down there at the bottom.
